Desist from dam construction by promoters: Assam to Arunachal
PTI | 06:08 PM,Aug 12,2010Kolkata, Sep 10 (PTI) Large parts of East and West Midnapore districts are facing widespread floods due to sudden release of water from Chandil dam in Jharkhand without any prior intimation to West Bengal government, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said today.Sore with the Jharkhand government for not informing before discharging the water, she asked Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh to immediately take up the matter with his Jharkhand counterpart."This is a recurring phenomenon to release water from dams without any prior intimation ... Had we known earlier, we could have taken precautionary measures just as we had asked DVC authorities during the recent flood-like situation in the state," Banerjee said.A system would have to be evolved in the matter of prior intimation regarding discharge of water from dams, she said.Meanwhile, people in low-lying areas in Egra-I, Potashpur, Bhagabanpur, Ghatal, Daspur, and Gopiballabhpur have been asked to evacuate to safer places.Banerjee said people's representatives in the affected areas were asked to lend a helping hand, while state food secretary was instructed to keep ready necessary foodgrains."There will be no dearth of relief for the affected," she said.A meeting was held by the chief secretary with district magistrates and superintendents of police of both the districts during the day.
