Footmarch against female infanticide in Pune
PTI | 09:07 PM,Jul 06,2011Mumbai, Jul 6 (PTI) In the backdrop of the cases of female infanticide in Maharashtra's Beed district, Baramati MP NCP chief Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule today said a 'padayatra' (footmarch) would be taken out to create awareness among the people on the issue. "Mass awareness is required on the issue of female infanticide as the cases cannot be curbed through legislations," Sule told reporters here. The 'padayatra' would start from Naigaon in Satara district on August 25 and would conclude at the birth place of Savitribai Phule in Pune on August 28, she said. "As many as 500 girls from across the state would participate in the rally, while 3,500 girls would take oath that only for health reasons would they do sonography and not for sex determination," she said. The march would witness the participation of Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil, who will come along with his daughter, and Public Works Development Minister Chhagan Bhujbhal on the first day, while Pawar and his nephew Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar would participate on the last day. "We would also invite celebrities and people from other walks of life to participate in the rally," Sule said. The foot-march has been organised by the Yashwantrao Chavan centre. The campaign to create awareness against female infanticide would last for five years, Sule said.
