

GNLA gets support from overground people, says CM
PTI | 11:02 PM,Feb 01,2012Shillong, Feb 1 (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today alleged that insurgent outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was getting support from people overground. "There are overground people hand in glove with the GNLA. We will come out with a list of them and tackle them legally," Sangma said. The Centre has notified the GNLA as a terrorist outfit on January 12, Sangma told reporters adding the state government did not want the Army deal with the GNLA, as advised by the Centre. condemning the activities of the GNLA, opposition Conrad K Sangma said, "Treating the GNLA as a terrorist group only will not solve the problem. The government should come up with programs that will improve the socio-economic level of the people." GNLA, which is fighting for a sovereign Garoland for the Garos, has recently demanded that the government withdraw security forces from the in three Garo Hills districts. Formed by former Deputy Superintendent of Police Pakchara R Sangma alias Champion R Sangma, the outfit has been involved in abduction, killing and extortion in the three Garo districts of Western Meghalaya.
