Goa govt to decide fate of aground ship tomorrow
PTI | 10:09 PM,Sep 01,2010Panaji, Sep 1 (PTI) Goa Government today said a meeting of bidders will be called to decide on the contract for taking away a ship, which has dangerously run aground on Goa coast posing environmental hazards. State Advocate General Subodh Kantak told the Goa bench of Bombay High that meeting of various bidders to take away the ship would be held tomorrow. He said the state has decided to give preference to Salgaoncar Mining Industries, original owner of the ship, who has volunteered to take away the ship `free of cost. The vessel which had run aground ten years ago due to bad weather is tilted precariously and split in two posing a major environmental hazard on the beach. Meanwhile, SMI has said that they can start the work on removing the ship only after they are given the ownership of the ship. SMI's director Sameer Salgaoncar said they will start the work of breaking the ship only after getting the ownership of the vessel. He said the ship will be taken away from the shore and broken into pieces to avoid pollution on the coast. SMI owned the ship when it hit the shore in the year 2000 but later state government took over the ship under Goa Tourist Places Protection Act in 2003 tendering the work to salvage it. .
