Govt in no mood to allow voting on price rise
PTI | 10:07 PM,Jul 29,2010New Delhi, July 29 (PTI) Even as the deadlock in Parliament continued for the second consecutive day today, the government is in no mood to allow voting on the issue of price rise as demanded by the Opposition. Parliament sources said that the government will not allow the issue of price rise being taken up for discussion in the Lok Sabha under Rule 184 which entails voting. They said there is hardly any difference between an adjournment motion which is a censure against the government and Rule 184, which is disapproval, both of which entail voting after discussion. After the adjournment motion on price rise was rejected by the Speaker yesterday, the BJP today pushed for a discussion on the issue under Rule 184. Government sources said they were willing to talk to the Opposition leaders to break the deadlock in Parliament but so far there has been no communication. The Business Advisory Committee of the Rajya Sabha, which met today, only discussed time allocation in the Upper House and the issue of price rise did not come up for discussion, the sources added. A senior minister in the government said that they were hopeful of the impasse ending as the Left could not be seen to be with the BJP on the same issue for a long time. He was hopeful as Parliament approved imposition of President's Rule in Jharkhand without any debate. As Opposition members stormed the well in the Lok Sabha and raised vociferous slogans in the Rajya Sabha, a statutory resolution approving the Central rule was put to vote and adopted by voice vote in both Houses. Meanwhile, BJP sources indicated that they could allow the House to function tomorrow as private members' bills are taken up but there was no official confirmation. However, on Monday, the main opposition will again raise the demand for a discussion on price rise under Rule 184, the sources said. A senior BJP MP denied that it was in talks with the government to work out a compromise formula on the issue in order to allow Parliament to function.
