

Heavy rains claim eight lives in Karnataka
PTI | 09:08 PM,Aug 25,2010Bangalore,Aug 25(PTI)Heavy rains lashing parts of Karnataka have claimed eight lives and resulted in a total loss of over Rs 91 crore in the last five days, official sources said. "The incessant rains resulting in flash floods in some districts have claimed eight lives in the last five days", Revenue Department officials told PTI. They said two deaths were reported in Bellary while one each in Gulbarga, Dharwad, Shimoga, Koppal, Tumkur and Bangalore, they said. In all, nearly 1,270 houses have been damaged and crops in over 12,464 hectares of agriculture land submerged in water were destroyed. "As per preliminary estimates the total loss has been to the tune of Rs 91.22 crore", they said. Meanwhile a report from Bellary, the worst-affected district, said main catchment areas of Hagari river receiving heavy rains and water level in Hagari has been rising. The inflow into Tungabhadra reservoir was gradually increasing. Inflow into the reservoir yesterday was 60,000 cusecs and 16,000 cusecs of water was being discharged through the 30 crest gates. The Purandara Mantapa located in Tungabhadra in Hampi, was submerged and a few other temples on the riverbank at the world heritage site have also been flooded, they said. Road Connectivity between Siruguppa and pilgrim centres such as Mantralayam and Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh has been cut off. While bridges at Raravi, Kudadarhal and Mastasugur have been submerged in Hagari waters, several villages in Siruguppa taluk have been marooned. Revenue officials said alert warnings of impending flash floods have been issued to 15 districts including Bellary, Bagalkot and coastal districts.
