Israel to set up 27 Centres of Excellence across India

Chandigarh, Jan 19 (PTI) Israel will set up 27 Indo- Israel Centres of Excellence for vegetables in different parts of India, the country's ambassador Alon Ushpiz said today. Bulk of these projects will be set up in Haryana, as the production capacity and climatic conditions of Israel and Haryana are quite similar, he said in an official release. Ushpiz, who was accompanied by Haryana Agriculture Minister Paramvir Singh, today visited the Indo-Israel Centre of Excellence for Vegetables in Gharaunda, Karnal. Lauding the efforts of the farmers in the state, the ambassador said that within a period of one year they have shown their excellence by increasing per hectare productivity by adopting Israeli technique. Ushpiz assured that Israel would extend technical assistance to the farmers for bee breeding, cultivation of organic flowers, cultivation of vegetables in saline waters, sewerage system, animal husbandry and mango cultivation. The project regarding this was under pipeline of the central government, he said. Speaking on the occasion, Paramvir Singh said the Indo- Israel collaboration had been extended for another three years up to 2014 for expanding the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables and making the technical system of the centre more better. The project was about to expire in March, 2012. The centre was established on January 17, 2011. Singh said another project with the collaboration of the Israel government at a cost of Rs 9.70 crore had also been set up at Magiyana in the Sirsa district of the state to boost fruit production. The state's vegetable production this year had increased to 46 lakh tonnes, as compared to 29 lakh tonnes of 2005, the Minister added.
