It will take world record to win gold in London:Swimming champ
PTI | 01:09 PM,Sep 11,2011Osaka, Sept 11 (Kyodo) Two-time double Olympic breaststroke champion Kosuke Kitajima believes he will need to set a world record to win a gold medal at the London Olympics next year because of the rise of his rivals. "To win gold, I think I have to set a world record," Kitajima said yesterday during a talk show at Namihaya Dome in Osaka. "A world record will be one of my targets as I aim for gold. I remember I was gunning for a world record as I prepared for the Beijing Olympics." At the world championships in Shanghai in July, the 28-year-old took silver in the 200 meters after finishing more than a full second behind Norwegian winner Alexander Dale Oen to settle for fourth place in the 100. Dale Oen was just 0.13 off the world record of 58.58 seconds Australia's Brenton Richard set at the 2009 meet in Rome during the height of the high-tech swimsuit frenzy. "I'll try to build my physical strength again," Kitajima said. Kitajima is considering swimming at a World Cup meet in Tokyo in November. (Kyodo)
