PTI | 08:08 PM,Aug 01,2010

Chennai, Aug 1 (PTI) The Indian Union Muslim League today charged the Left-ruled states of Kerala and West Bengal with doing little for the welfare of Muslims and described the condition of the people of the community in the eastern state as "pathetic". "Many of the Government of India welfare measures for the minorities have not been implemented in the state of Kerala. The government of Kerala has miserably failed in implementation of the welfare schemes for minorities and backward classes," IUML President and Union Minister of State for Railways, E Ahamed told reporters. Kerala had especially failed to implement Centrally sponsored schemes for minorities, he said, briefing reporters on the resolutions adopted at the IUML National Executive here. Regarding the condition of Muslims in West Bengal he said, "Considering the very pathetic condition of the minorities in West Bengal, we urge the Centre to direct the state government to take effective steps for implementation of Sachar Committee recommendations for their welfare," he said. The Executive also appealed to Muslims not to fall prey to "nefarious designs of evil forces" who wanted to disrupt the secular fabric of the country. "The IUML always dissociates from those elements and outfits with ulterior motives, who resort to heinous crime and violence thereby misleading the community," a resolution said. Among others, the party expressed concern over spiralling prices, stressed for implementation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act and demanded that the Centre implement recommendations of the Ranganath Mishra Commission "with suitable modifications" to ensure adequate representation for Muslims in education and government jobs.PTI SA BN AN
