

Jaya seeking to prolong wealth case: prosecution tells HC
PTI | 09:08 PM,Aug 16,2010Chennai, Aug 23 (PTI) A Madras High Court judge, who had appeared in a case against former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, today opted out of hearing a petition by her relating to the 'birthday gift' case filed against her by CBI.Justice C T Selvam, before whom the AIADMK leader's petition was posted, decided not to hear the case after a memo was filed on her behalf, pointing out that he had appeared against her in his capacity as Additional Public Prosecutor.Jayalalithaa wanted the petition to be listed before some other judge.The judge directed the registry to place the petition before the Chief Justice for posting before another judge.In her petition, Jayalalithaa had sought to quash the case against her on the grounds of "inordinate and unexplained delay".The charge sheet was liable to be quashed, she contended, citing a Supreme Court ruling.According to CBI, Jayalalithaa had accepted 89 demand drafts worth Rs two crore from 57 people drawn on various banks in the state in her name on her birthday in 1992.The CBI claimed that two former AIADMK ministers K A Shengottaiyan and Alagu Thirunavukarasu had presented her with DDs for Rs 22.53 lakh and Rs 22.50 lakh respectively.
