

J&K govt honours first Muslim woman from state to crack IAS
PTI | 08:05 PM,May 18,2011Srinagar, May 18 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir government today honoured Oveesa Iqbal, the first Muslim woman from the state to crack the IAS examination who is among the seven candidates from the state to have cleared the UPSC examination this year. Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora presented a traditional Ladakhi scarf or 'khatak' to Oveesa on the sidelines of a function. "It is a moment of pride for the state, especially Ladakhis, that a female candidate from Leh has cracked the most prestigious civil services examination of the country," he said. "Her success will go a long way to inspire the youth to strive for civil services and become part of the largest administrative set up of the country," he said. Oveesa (25) hails from remote Chachoot village in Ladakh region and her father is a farmer. The graduate in Chemical Engineering cleared the IAS examination this year in her third attempt.
