

J-K govt to set up intelligence cell to tackle drug rackets
PTI | 02:02 PM,Feb 13,2012Jammu, Feb 13 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir government will set up a special cell to unearth spurious drug rackets and fast-track prosecution in such cases. "Under the new drug policy, an intelligence-cum-legal cell shall be established within the Drug and Food Control Organisation, Jammu and Kashmir, to crack on spurious drug rackets and facilitate their prompt prosecution," Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma said. The new drug policy aims to promote access to effective, quality of drug, efficient procurement and adequate supply management system. Sharma, the brain behind the policy which came into operation early this month, said efforts shall be made to rationalise the number of drug licenses. The intelligence unit would build a network to gather information and pay incentives to its informers, he said. Special checking squads under the supervision of Deputy Controllers will be constituted to undertake periodic inspections, according to the new policy. Controller, Drugs and Food Control Organisation implements the legislation and regulation on pharmaceuticals to ensure quality, safety, efficacy of drugs and accuracy of product information. The policy plans to strengthen drug testing laboratories by providing equipment, qualified analysts, adequate space and fulfilling other requirements. Annual testing load and average testing time of existing Drug Testing Laboratories shall be fixed for proper accountability.
