Management and metering of water usage needed: Experts
PTI | 06:01 PM,Jan 08,2012Ahmedabad, Jan 8 (PTI) Controlled management of water resources and metering of usage are need of the hour, experts said at a seminar here today. "Gujarat has made significant achievements on water management front and Narmada dam and other check-dams have contributed a lot in increasing the availability of water in the state," Chairman of Sardar Patel Institute of Socio-Economic Research, Y K Alagh, the chief guest at the seminar, said in his address. "But if projection made by a well-known expert is anything to go by, per capita availability of water in the state would be just 25 per cent of the minimum requirement by 2020," he said at the Water Management seminar organised by the Rotary Club. "So we must learn to use water effectively and for that purpose we must pay for the use of water," Alagh said. Pankaj Sampat, General Manager, Doshion Ltd, emphasised the need for metering the water use and water recycling. "Waste-water consists of only one per cent impurities. So if this water is recycled, it has large environmental and socio-economic benefits," he said. Sampat explained through statistic that if water was recycled in urban areas of Gujarat, the value of water made available for use could be as high as Rs 1,800 crore per year.
