Mumbai civic body claims drop in malaria cases

Mumbai, Sep 6 (PTI) Despite one malaria death being reported every day on an average, the local civic body has claimed a 25 per cent drop in positive cases of the disease."We have seen a declining trend in malaria cases. The cases are declining week by There has been a decline in malaria cases from mid August," Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said today."There has been a decline by 20-25 per cent in malaria cases when compared week-wise," she said.According to figures provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on August 16, 128 cases were reported and two deaths, on August 23, 131 cases and one death and on August 30, 96 cases and one death."If seen week-wise then the cases have reduced in the month of August. We will make the standard operating procedures (SOP) compulsory throughout the year to reduce the infection and mortality," Mhaiskar said.Tips from the National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR) and Maharashtra Government, who successfully dealt with the mosquito menace in Gadchiroli district, have helped us in curbing the disease," Mhaiskar said.But the data available with the Public Health Department says in August 2009, 3,000 cases of malaria were reported with 41 deaths. This year in August, 22,709 cases were reported, of which 47 were fatal.
