

National Trust reveals U.S. places to visit

The private, non-profit group that is dedicated to saving historic places released its 2011 list of recommended destinations, which range from a charming seaport town to a city that was the home of the country's first president George Washington. "This year's Dozen Distinctive Destinations include some of America's best places to visit," said Stephanie Meeks, the president of the trust. "They combine historic appeal and modern culture in a way that keeps visitors coming back," she added in a statement. Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River and the nation's capital and Washington's home topped the list, which also included Chapel Hill in North Carolina, described as the "Southern Part of Heaven," and the historic town of Colorado Springs in Colorado. Dandridge, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Northern California Victorian seaport town of Eureka also made the list. Other destinations include: * Muskogee, Oklahoma - a town which was once the unofficial capital of Indian Territory and now has festivals, museums and restaurants. * New Bedford, Massachusetts - once one of the world's largest whaling ports. * Paducah, Kentucky - in the heart of the Four Rivers region of the state. * San Antonio, Texas - a frontier town which offers an Old West experience. * Saint Paul, Minnesota - a city with an abundance of historic buildings including the home of the author F. Scott Fitzgerald. * Sheridan, Wyoming - another town that provides visitors with a Western experience. * Sonoma, California - located in the heart of the state's wine country.
