NCP demands immediate release of abducted engineers
PTI | 10:01 PM,Jan 28,2012Shillong, Jan 28 (PTI) Opposition NCP in Meghalaya today condemned the abduction of two power engineers by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and demanded their unconditional safe release. "We demand the safe release of the two engineers of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) abducted by the GNLA," Opposition Leader COnrad K Sangma told PTI. He said the party condemns the act by the militant outfit. Terming the abduction as "undemocratic and cowardly", Conrad said, "It is wrong on the part of the GNLA to target officers for the government's failure to bring about development". The GNLA yesterday demanded the government to solve 'power crisis' in the Garo Hills region else the two engineers will not be released. "Government should reply within seven days to the people of Garo Hills why there was no convincing rural electrification in the far flung areas of Garo Hills," GNLA C-in-C Sohan D Shira told media houses here. The chief commander argued that rural electrification in the Khasi Jaintia Hills has been satisfactory as compared to the Garo Hills. "We have received many complaints against MeECL and that is why we had to take this step (abduct power engineers)," Shira reasoned. (MORE)
