NCP upset with Godinho's statements over Goa poll-alliance

PTI | 02:11 PM,Nov 12,2011

Panaji, Nov 12 (PTI) The NCP in Goa has taken objection to the statements by a Congress spokesman here in which he had claimed that the local leadership was against having alliance with the Sharad-Pawar-led party for the State legislative assembly elections scheduled next year. NCP's National General Secretary and Goa observer Bharati Chawan told reporters today that the party has lodged a strong protest before All India Congress Committee Observer Jagmit Singh Brar over the remarks by Congress' local campaign manager Mauvin Godinho. "We warned them that such things should not recur in future at any cost," Chawan said referring to the statement by Godinho. He had said that local Congress leaders feel that they should contest on their own. But the party would forge an alliance only if national leadership wants them to do so. Congress-NCP leaders had held a joint co-alliance meeting this week in Goa to discuss the seat sharing. Brar, representing the Congress, had said that the alliance is going to happen as it is an all India level tie up. Chawan today said the party is willing to align with Congress in Goa but would not settle for less than six seats. "We have asked for 12 seats but we will not have an alliance if they are giving us less than 6 seats," she said. The NCP leader said the party on its own can contest all the 40 constituencies and emerge was a front runner. "We have the capability to win majority seats," she said. The Congress-NCP government is currently ruling Goa with Sharad Pawar led party being given two ministerial berths. The party has three legislators in the assembly while Congress has 20.
