Orissa HC lawyers extends cease work
PTI | 11:08 PM,Aug 31,2010Cuttack, Aug 31 (PTI) The week-long cease work agitation by lawyers of Orissa High Court to press for compensation for a colleague killed in police firing at Bagalpur has been extended till Saturday. HC Bar Association secretary Lalitendu Samantray said a delegation of lawyers would soon meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to apprise him about the demand for Rs 50 lakh compensation to the family of Bishnu Charan Dash, the advocate killed in police firing on August 23. The striking lawyers had earlier decided to continue their ongoing cease work agitation till today. The advocates are also demanding a government job for a member of the victim's family and stringent action against the police personnel responsible for the death, which evoked state-wide protests from legal fraternity affecting judicial work in the state. Red Cross Society (Cuttack chapter), which had given Rs 1 lakh on the day of the incident, released an additional Rs 2 lakh as compensation but the lawyers were not satisfied with the amount. Mishra said a steering committee has been formed to monitor the agitation programmes of the lawyers. The HC Bar Association president and secretary would be its conveners. The situation would be reviewed and the course of action decided at a meeting to be held on that day, he said. The state government had announced a judicial inquiry into the incident and released Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the bereaved family.
