PTI | 10:01 PM,Jan 16,2012Vadodara, Jan 16 (PTI) The last rites of country's first woman photojournalist Homai Vyarawala were performed here today. The 98-year-old, who died yesterday, was cremated at the Khaswadi crematorium in Karelibag area, as per her express wish. Traditionally, bodies of the deceased Parsis are left at the Towers of Silence to be consumed by vultures or other carnivorous birds. "It was Vyarawala's desire that she be cremated which she had mentioned in her will," said her neighbour Jayshree Mishra, a retired professor at the Maharaja Sayajirao University. "During her last days Vyarawala used to say that the population of vultures has drastically reduced in Vadodara due to extensive urbanisation and that is why she preferred cremation. Vyarawala's husband was also cremated," Mishra told PTI. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Vyarawala on his twitter account describing her as "a great woman photojournalist who clicked photographs having historic value." City Mayor Dr Jyoti Pandya paid last respects to Vyarawala by placing a wreath on her body. Asim Ghosh, a photographer who came from Delhi to attend the funeral, said, "She had a developed technique in those days as to how to preserve photographs for years. Vyarawala had a perfect understanding of photography which reflected in her works." A large number of people from all walks of life turned up at the crematorium to pay their last respects to Vyarawala. PTI COR PB PD VKV
