Posts to release commemorative postage stamp on Page
PTI | 10:09 AM,Sep 01,2010Mumbai, Sep 1 (PTI) The Department of Posts will issue a commemorative postage stamp on late V S Page, veteran Gandhian and former chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council, in recognition of his services to the society. It is proposed to release the commemorative postage stamp during Page's birth anniversary in July next year. "Recognising the yeomen services rendered to the society by Page, MLCs Mohan Joshi and Ulhas Pawar had demanded release of a postage stamp on the late leader during his birth centenary year and accordingly, Gurudas Kamat, Minister of State for Communications and IT, directed the Department of Posts to take necessary action in the matter, a release said. Though Page made valuable contributions in various fields of public life during his career, the most significant one was his persuasion to adopt 'Employment Guarantee Scheme' to guarantee the right to every person to secure employment, Kamat said. This was a solid and effective step towards upliftment of the weaker sections of the society, especially in rural areas, he said. In 1977, the Maharashtra Employment Guarantee Act was unanimously passed and came into force in the State. Page's life mission was to have the principle of employment guarantee accepted by the Centre for the entire nation, Kamat said. .
