PTI | 08:01 PM,Jan 11,2012

Kolkata, Jan 11 (PTI) A minister in the West Bengal government today described the attack on the principal of the Rampurhat College, Sibashis Banerjee, as 'unacceptable', saying that principals of educational institutions should be impartial and above politics. "Nobody expects such incidents, we also don't support these incidents,", West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim said. "It is also true that the CPI(M) and its friend political party trying to politicise the issue banking on such stray incidents", Hakim, a Trinamool Congress leader said. The minister alleged that the CPI(M) was involved in politicising education with its diktats from the party headquarters directly and the case of Santosh Bhattacharya, former Vice Chancellor of the Calcutta University, was an example of this. He said that Mamata Banerjee government was committed to removing politicisation of education. "It is the CPI(M) which has politicised education and even during its rule incidents of disappearance of teacher and theatre personality have taken place", Hakim alleged saying the government would order a probe to these incidents. "There is also a complaint of financial irregularities against the principal, probe into which will soon be ordered by the education department. May be this incident was in search of his escape route", Hakim said. Hakim also alleged that there was an attempt to vitiate the atmosphere of the college. "The Principal must be above politics", he said. The minister said that the incidents at Raiganj or Majdia were different from the incident at Rampurhat. Banerjee fell unconscious after a section of students gheraoed him in protest against his yesterday's press statement that he had been threatened by students that Raiganj would be repeated if he did not withdraw newly introduced student identity cards. Banerjee had made allegations against the TMCP and CP students' unions yesterday. PTI AKB MD
