

Raids conducted at several places, hukkas recovered
PTI | 03:01 PM,Jan 05,2012Srinagar, Jan 4 (PTI) Continuing its drive against smoking in public places, authorities here have raided an upmarket restaurant on the banks of the Dal lake and confiscated 'hukkas' (smoking pipe) from there. An anti-tobacco squad inspected 'Robusta Gazebo' restaurant on Boulevard road in the city and found young boys and teenage girls "puffing hukka and some intoxicating stuff", an official said. Later officials from the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) raided the restaurant and seized all the hukkas, he said. He said legal action has been initiated against the restaurant owner Junaid Ahmed for violating various provisions of Control of Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). In a separate incident in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, an Anti Tobacco Squad raided various public places, including government offices, and fined 27 persons for smoking at public places. A fine of Rs 4,300 was recovered from them, the official said. Among those fined included the ARTO Ganderbal, Secretary Municipal Council Ganderbal and Horticulture Development Officer Ganderbal, he said.
