

Security stepped up in Mumbai for Republic Day
PTI | 05:01 PM,Jan 25,2012Mumbai, Jan 25 (PTI) Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations tomorrow, security has been stepped up with nearly 40,000 police personnel fanning out across the metropolis to maintain a tight vigil. "Security has been tightened for the Republic Day. Entire city police force (numbering 40,000) has been put on alert," Police Department spokesperson and DCP (Crime) Nisar Tamboli told PTI today. Quick Response Teams carrying hi-end weapons have been deployed at strategic locations, police said. "Police stationed at vital installations have been asked to take extra security precautions," Tamboli stated. Railway Police will carry out random checks and frisk passengers at the stations. Meanwhile, a parade by Maharashtra Police will be held at Shivaji Park Ground in the presence of Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, his deputy Ajit Pawar and DGP K Subramaniam, among others. Vehicular movement on seven roads near Shivaji Park in Dadar area will remain closed for six hours beginning from 6 am tomorrow, police said.
