South Africa joins tripartite partnership to tackle climate
PTI | 04:09 PM,Sep 27,2010change Pretoria, Sept 27 (Buanews) The governments of Denmark, Mexico and South Africa -- the host nations for climate change talks COP15, COP16 and COP17 respectively--have decided to establish a Troika which will facilitate close co-operation on the ongoing United Nations climate change negotiations. South Africa is hosting the Congress Of Parties (COP 17) next year while Mexico will welcome world leaders to talks later this year. In a statement here yesterday, the South African Department of Environmental Affairs said the co-operation was aimed at providing continuity and strengthening the ongoing climate negotiations by providing leadership and guidance in the negotiation process. "In light of the serious climate challenges facing the world, the Troika is calling upon all parties to contribute to the achievement of substantive progress during the upcoming COP16 in Cancun, Mexico," the statement added. "The Troika firmly believes that by means of a joint effort and renewed commitment in the negotiations a broad and balanced package of decisions could be agreed upon at COP16 which will lead to immediate action." The statement also said that the Troika recognized that fast-start financing was important to building trust and transparency as what the parties contributed was essential. "Thus, the Troika urges parties from developed countries to deliver on their pledges made in Copenhagen on fast-start financing and put forward concrete actions," it said. The three countries further stressed the need for substantial progress in the upcoming sessions of the Ad Hoc Working Groups, to be held in Tianjin, China from Oct 4 to 9, 2010. They welcomed the many actions undertaken by national and local governments, businesses, and civil society in pursuit of a low carbon world and solutions. (Buanews)
