SPSB wins archery championship

Jamshedpur, Jan 28 (PTI) Star-studded Steel Plant Sports Board (SPSB) dominated the 32nd Senior National Archery Championship emerged overall champion with six gold and four silver at JRD Tata Sports complex here today. Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) with five gold, five silver and nine broze medals finished runners-up while Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) had to content on the third place with three gold, five silver and a broze. Country’s top rank archer and world cup silver medalist, Deepika Kumar and Pawan Xalxo (both SPSB) lifted the individual gold in the women and men recurve Olympic round in the final of the national meet. 18-year-old CWG double gold medalist, Deepika, who has already reserved her berth for the London Olympics slated for July-August, beat her Olympic partner L Bombalya Devi (RSPB) in a tough contest. Deepika shot the bull’s eye in a shoot off after both the Olympians tied 5-5 in the set points. Renu of Uttar Pradesh clinched the bronze defeating London Olympic qualifier Chekrovolu Swuro (Nagaland). In the men’s section, Pawan Xalxo maintained his form right from the beginning and kept on widening the point gap till the end against his team mate Atanu Das. Xalxo finished off the event with 6-4 points while CWG individual gold medalist Rahul Banerjee had to content with a broze. SPSB, however, suffered a jolt when Punjab archers comprising of Satbir Kaur, CWG medalist Amandeep Kaur and Komal Sharma beat the host team comprised of Deepika, Sumita Kumari and V Sharada 213-27 in the women’s team event. RSPB team comprised of Internation archers L. Bombalya Devi, V Pranitha and Rimil Biruli defeated Uttar Pradesh for a Bronze. SPSB archers including the lone London Olympics qualifier Jayanta Talukdar, Binod Swansi, Atanu Das and Pawan Xalxo excelled over Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) archers - Olympian Tarundeep Rai, Vishwas, Bulbul Marandi and Rajiv Basumatary - 225-223 to claim the gold in team event. RSPB finished third with 220 points defeating Bihar for the third place.
