TNPCB rules out presence of gas in pvt firm''s premises
PTI | 10:07 PM,Jul 26,2010Chennai,Jul26 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board today ruled out the presence of any gas or other chemicals in the premises of private firm Foxconn at Sriperumbudur near here, where over 200 workers had fallen ill last week after inhaling pesticide sprayed to disinfect the unit. "Officials of TNPCB conducted a study on July 24 in the factory premises and found no presence of chemicals or other gases. The persons fainted after inhaling some pesticide sprayed there," TNPCB Public Relations officer C Sivalingam said in a release here about the July 23 incident. While production at the unit was stopped and workers shifted to a nearby unit, ten of them fainted the next day and this was due to ''breathlessness'' suffered at the workplace, he said adding they went home after treatment. Foxconn, an outsourcing company providing boards and chips for electronic equipment, had remained closed for a year due to lack of orders and had reopened recently. Meanwhile, the CPI-M backed workers' body, CITU demanded Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's intervention in the matter. ''A probe committee comprising a judge and chemicals expert, should be formed,' CITU General Secretary A Soundararajan said in a release here.
