UMHUPA team visits old-city on GPCC complaint
PTI | 11:02 PM,Feb 13,2012Ahmedabad, Feb 13 (PTI) A team from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (UMHUPA) today visited the old-city area to take feedback from the hawkers affected due to implementation of the JNNURM scheme here. The visit of the team led by Capt Subrata Mukhopadhayay is following a complaint filed by the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) general secretary Khurshid Saiyed with the Ministry. Khurshid, in his complaint to the UMHUPA, claimed that hundreds of hawkers were facing livelihood crisis in the wake of the JNNURM scheme being implemented by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) here. "I have come here for an inspection of the site on the basis of a complaint filed by GPCC general secretary Khurshid Saiyed," said Mukhopadhayay, who is nodal officer for the visit. The AMC under the JNNURM project has proposed to make the area between Teen Darwaza to Bhadra Kali temple as heritage zone where no vehicles would be allowed. He, along with with Congress MLAs, visited areas in old-city area-Teen Darwaza to Bhadra Kali temple - where hawkers line up on the footpaths for selling their products. According to GPCC, funds under JNNURM scheme are given to the state governments and municipal corporations on the condition that those affected by the scheme should be rehabilitated. But in the case of old-city area, the AMC has begun the project without any plans for rehabilitating the hawkers operating here for last so many years, a GPCC official said. The hawkers have been demanding an alternative space, a GPCC spokesperson said.
