UP govt closes 3 more tanneries in Kanpur for polluting Ganga
PTI | 06:11 PM,Nov 25,2011Kanpur (UP), Nov 25 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board has ordered closure of three more tanneries here for discharging toxic wastes in Ganga river despite several notices, officials said today. With this, 24 tanneries have been ordered to close down in the last two months for polluting the Ganges. "The three tanneries were found guilty of polluting the river despite the board warning them several times against release of toxic wastes into river Ganga," Radheshyam, regional officer of Pollution Control Board, said. Protesting the order, the tannery owners said the polluted water goes to the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) before being released in the river. They said if tanneries continue to close down, thousands of labourers will be rendered unemployed which will pose a threat to Kanpur's leather industry.
