PTI | 09:10 PM,Oct 08,2011Amritsar, Oct 8 (PTI) A Vendor Development Programme session was held today at CII Destination Punjab, the four-day Expo organised by the industry body CII here. Tractor manufacturers like the Hoshiarpur-based International Tractors Ltd (ITL) makers of Sonalika Brand of tractors and Mahindra & Mahindra Mohali plant offered MSMEs to become their Vendors and cash in on the growing demand for tractor spare parts. Both manufacturers are also looking at expanding their manufacturing capacity thus ensuring that there was immense scope for Punjab-based MSME. Sandeep Kumar Singh, Chief Manager Purchase, International Tractors and S K Dewan, General Manager Sourcing, Mahindra & Mahindra made presentations to the potential vendors and said it would be a mutually beneficial proposition. While the vendors would benefit as they would be able to expand their business, the companies would be able reduce their inventory cost by having local vendors. In order to attract and facilitate the MSMEs, ITL announced that the company had set up a Vendor Development Park near its unit in Hoshirapur. They would also provide relevant assistance in terms of technology and technical know-how. Sandeep Kumar Singh said that there is a scope for setting up alloy steel and forging component, fabrication & sheet metal components manufacturing units etc. On this occasion, Brig. Raja Puri, DDG Indigenisation, Army Hqs, New Delhi said, there are over 450,000 different types of spare parts required for the defence sector equipment like tanks, heavy air weapon systems, electronic and engineering equipments. As the life of certain equipment, which had been purchased a couple of decades ago, had been extended the defence forces were running short of spare parts because the overseas suppliers had stopped manufacturing them. Currently less than one percent of the total inventory had been indigenised, so one could well imagine the potential, he said. Group Captain SV Rao, Squadron Commander indigenisation, 3BRD, AF Chandigarh said that the Air Force needs aviation spare parts of international standards in huge numbers. There were more than 2,000 products required for the USSR manufactured Helicopters and fighter Aircraft. There are common spare parts like power supply modules, fasteners, ball bearings, houses, bushes, modules , chemicals, filter elements etc which the Air Force requires in huge numbers and this is an excellent opportunity for the MSME sector of Punjab. Meanwhile, public made a beeline for the Pakistani and Afghani stalls here which were showcasing traditional clothes, dry fruits and shoes.
