

WB govt sanctions Rs 10 crore to make Beliaghata canal
PTI | 10:08 PM,Aug 24,2010pollution-free Kolkata, Aug 24 (PTI) The West Bengal government has sanctioned Rs 10 crore to make the Beliaghata circular canal pollution-free for the benefit of residents living beside it."The project will be taken up by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation," Urban Development Minister Asok Bhattacharya told reporters.In the next phase, desiltation of the canal would be taken up at the cost of Rs 40 crore, which would be shared with the Centre on a 70:30 basis. However the cost was yet to be sanctioned by the National Ganga River Basin Authority, the minister said after a meeting with his officials where Irrigation Minister Subhas Naskar was also present.The Union Urban Development Ministry wanted a detailed report on the project by the experts of Roorkie IIT, which had been sent.Bhattacharya also discussed with Naskar on making the Tolly Nullah a pollution-free zone.The Kolkata Citizens Forum had earlier demanded that the Tolly Nullah be made pollution free in public interest, he said.
