PTI | 08:11 PM,Nov 24,2011

Kolkata, Nov 24 (PTI) West Bengal Government will enact a law for permanent settlement of hawkers and there will not be any eviction without rehabilitation. "We must bring in a legislation to resolve hawkers' problems. However, there won't be any eviction without their rehabilitation", Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim told the Hawkers Sangram Committee here today. Observing a 'Protest Day' on the occasion of 'Operation Sunshine of 1996' anniversary, the committee today organised a procession before submitting its memorandum to the minister at the state secretariat. Later its General Secretary Saktiman Ghosh said that the hawkers had demanded proper rehabilitation, insurance for them and housing under Rajiv Awas Yojana. Despite Supreme Court directive to all state governments to make state Acts, West Bengal government is yet to make any legislation, he said. The Centre is scheduled to place a Bill named "Right to Livelihood" in Parliament to protect livelihood of the hawkers, he said. PTI AKB PR
