

Wild elephant kills farmer, villagers protest
PTI | 05:08 PM,Aug 30,2011Sambalpur (Orissa), Aug 30 (PTI) A farmer was killed today by a wild elephant at Sambalpur in Orissa, triggering protests from angry villagers who damaged a jeep of the forest department and blocked a national highway. "Brusabha Behera (45),a farmer of Betagarh in Rairakhol, was trampled to death by a tusker while he was proceeding to his farmland with his brother," SDPO Rairakhol R K Dora said.Protesters later blocked national highway-55 connecting Sambalpur with Angul, disrupting traffic for over five hours.They also manhandled local ranger Tankadhar Behera and damaged a jeep, sources said.An ex-gratia of Rs two lakh would be paid to the victim's family by the state government, they said.The pachyderm has killed cattle, damaged houses and standing crops in the area in the past month.
