

World class college of fine arts to be set up by Roerich trust
PTI | 11:03 PM,Mar 25,2011Shimla, Mar 25 (PTI) A state-of-the-art Roerich International College of Fine arts will be developed at village Naggar in Kullu valley, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today said. Presiding over the 16th meeting of Board of Trustees of International Roerich Memorial Trust here, Dhumal said that it was a dream of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the world renowned painter late Nicolai Roerich to develop Naggar village as a centre of art. He said that a detailed project report would be prepared and curriculum would be framed to select different forms of art to be taught to the students in the colleges. Joint effort would be made by the Trust, Russian Embassy and the state government to generate funds for the same and an action plan would also be prepared to develop the complex as a combination of Himachali and Russian architect in an ecologically safe manner so that the solitude and natural beauty of the place remained undisturbed. The Trust was created by Russian artist Svetoslav Roerich and his wife Devika Rani, big screen queen of yesteryears. The IRMT, located in Kullu Valley in the state functions under the patronage of the co-chairmen of the Russian-Indian Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IGC). The memorial complex of the Roerichs in the township of Naggar in the Valley comprises the estate where the illustrious Russian family of the elder Roerichs lived from 1929 to 1947, an Art Gallery and the 'Urusvati' Himalayan Research Institute. Until his death in 1993, it was the abode of Svetoslav Roerich and his legendary film star wife, Rani. The estate is considered one of the unique treasure-houses of world culture.PTI PCL
