Medak: Andhra Pradesh government is desperately trying to provide seven hours of free power in the face of a severe crisis. More than the industries it is the farmers who are facing the brunt as they are already reeling under heavy debt and the losses suffered due to floods. For Ranga Goud even five acres of land is not enough to make a profit this year. The 50-year-old farmer had sown paddy in the kharif season but irrigation was hit by lack of electricity and Goud lost much of his crop. He, along with other farmers, has decided to stop growing paddy, a worrying trend for the state that is historically known as the rice bowl of India. "I have sufficient water but no electricity to pump that water to my crop. I cannot afford to grow paddy with such power supply. There is no fixed time or assurance of how much power supply we will get," says Goud. Andhra Pradesh is battling a severe power crisis this year. Farmers like Lakshman relied on the government's promise to deliver seven hours of free power in planning their crops but with devastating consequences. "I had planted maize, because there's no power to plant paddy. But even my maize crop dried up with no water. They sometimes give power supply after midnight. How does that help a farmer?" asks Lakshman. Paddy farmers are the worst hit, bearing the brunt of the power crisis that's forcing many to now cultivate sunflower or vegetables. The agriculture department is expecting paddy farming area to go down from 1.37 lakh hectares earlier this year to 50,000 hectares in the upcoming season. "With so many paddy farmers in this region, the number of suicides are also going up because lack of power is leaving farmers with huge losses and debts," says Lingam Reddy, Secretary, Farmer Federation, Medak district. The state government, meanwhile, has decided to spend another Rs 1200 crore to buy surplus power for agriculture requirements in the rabi season, starting next month. It's a political promise that's fast becoming the Achilles heel for the state government. Providing seven hours of free power supply seems far fetched to the farmers in the state and with the load only expected to increase in the coming weeks, the big concern for the farmers is will their next crop see the light of the day.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail will hit the tracks by the end of 2014 and ferry about 15 lakh passengers every day, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said in Hyderabad on Sunday. Speaking after inaugurating certain works of Hyderabad Metro, he said the first trial run would be held in June 2014.

At least five persons, including a child, were charred and over a dozen others injured in a fire accident at Manikonda area in the city, police said. The mishap occurred at Puppalguda at around 8:45 pm on Sunday when the blaze, which started from a makeshift shed erected by a local shooting unit, engulfed a nearby residential apartment, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dwarka Tirumala Rao said.
