Sikkim Chief Minister supports demand for Gorkhaland

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on Saturday said he supports the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland. "We completely support the Gorkhaland demand. However, it is up to the Centre to decide whether it would accept the demand," Chamling told reporters in Siliguri, where he innaugurated a three-day MCCS Gitanjali Mango festival.

An Army Brigadier will face disciplinary action after he was indicted by a Court of Inquiry (CoI) for allegedly borrowing money from his subordinates and taking away property from his official residence during his posting in Sikkim. Sources said that a CoI was initiated against Brigadier LI Singh for allegedly borrowing money from wet canteen contractors of units and from subordinate officers and it has recommended disciplinary action against him.

Women workers of the newly formed Sikkim Krantikari Morcha were assaulted by male police officers on February 11, after they allegedly threw plastic bottles at Chief Minister Pawan Chamling's car. The Inspector General of Police of the area, Akshay Sachdeva ordered a lathicharge inside the office of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, even as the process to identify the miscreants who threw plastic bottles on Chamling's car was on.

A satellite-based study has indicated that a huge glacial lake has formed atop the Himalayas in Sikkim with a "very high" potential for it to burst and create devastation downstream. Analysis of satellite data has revealed that the lake has formed at the snout of South Lhonak glacier, that is about 7,000 meters high on the mountain in the northeastern state.
