

Americans flocking to India for stem cell therapy
Washington: A growing number of Americans are travelling to India to seek treatment for rare diseases through India's experimental embryonic stem cell therapy, according to an investigative report.
Among them Cash Burnaman, a 6-year-old South Carolina boy, who travelled with his parents to India seeking treatment for a rare genetic condition that has left him developmentally disabled, CNN reported.

Wheat allergy or celiac a cause of malnutrition
New Delhi: A recent study conducted by doctors at AIIMS and Maulana Azad Medical College has shown a startling increase in the number of celiac cases in the country. The study reveals that undiagnosed celiac or allergy to wheat may be a major cause of malnutrition in the country.
Three-year-old Gudiya has body of a one year old, all because of a condition that is increasingly prevalent across India. Gudiya's retarded growth is a result of celiac, an inherited allergy to gluten, found in wheat. Until her illness was detected, she kept being fed wheat, which her body just could not accept.

7 pc anti-malarial drugs in India fake: Study
Mumbai: In a shocking study published in medical journal, The Lancet, scientists have found that one-third of malaria medicines in South East Asia and Africa are either fake or of poor quality. What is even worse is that a majority of these fake medicines are being manufactured in India and China.
According to teh World Health Organisation (WHO), 2,500 people die worldwide every day of malaria. The Lancet study says 7 per cent of anti-malarial drugs in India are counterfeit.

New Delhi: A new study by UK-based medical journal Lancet has found that seven per cent of anti-malarial drugs tested in India are of poor quality and many are fake. The study goes on to say that 1 in every 3 anti-malarial drugs sold in southeast Asia are also fake.
Researchers analysed data based on 1400 drug samples in five classes from seven Southeast Asian countries to reach to this conclusion.

'Antibiotic azithromycin can cause cardiovascular death'
New Delhi/Mumbai: A US study has found that the commonly used antibiotic, azithromycin, poses a big threat to the heart. The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine says that azithromycin can cause cardiovascular death.
According to the study, azithromycin poses a two-and-a-half time higher risk of cardiovascular death compared to other antibiotics or no antibiotic.

What you should eat to fight the heat
New Delhi: With summers in full swing and the mercury heading north, doctors advise that apart from drinking lots of water, a special summer diet consisting of light and healthy food would ensure a cool mind and body. Ritika Samadar, chief dietician at Max Hospital, said fluids with electrolytes like coconut water and lemonade should be consumed and oily foods have to be avoided. "In summer, light food should be preferred which can be digested easily. So, oily and junk food like pizzas, burgers must be avoided," Samadar said.
Vijai K.S. Shukla, chairperson, Omega 3 Council of India, says that vegetables with high water content like onions, tomatoes and cucumbers should be regularly eaten as they will not only cool down the body but provide the daily quota of nutrition as well. "For the meat lovers, there is a delicious alternative to fried chicken and red meat -- roasted or grilled fish which have high amounts of fatty acids helping in regulating blood pressure, immune responses and liver function," said Shukla.

'Drugs banned in developed world sold in India'
New Delhi: Pointing to a collusive nexus between drug manufacturers, officials of Drugs Control Organisation and medical experts in granting approvals to new drugs, a Parliamentary Panel said drugs banned, discarded or withdrawn in developed countries are in circulation in India.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare also pointed to serious lapses and irregularities on the approvals of new drugs and pointed out that 33 such drugs were approved without conducting clinical trials on Indian patients.
