New Delhi: One person was killed and six badly injured died after after two trains collided on the outskirts of Ghaziabad early on Monday.

The accident took place at the Karkar Model Railway station when an oncoming Padmawati Express rammed into the Kalindi Express, that was stationed there, at full speed.

A rescue operation is on to bring all passengers to safety and clear the tracks.

According to the Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police, Deepak Ratan, who arrived at the accident site within 10 minutes, Kalindi Express had halted at the railway station due to some signal problems.

The rear coach of the Kanpur-Bhiwani Kalindi Express, which was badly damaged after being hit, derailed due to the impact of the collision, Saxena said.

Rail traffic on the route was disrupted. The traffic would be restored once the tracks are cleared, he added.

In a similar accident in 1995, about 300 people were killed and more than 400 injured when Kalindi Express rammed into Pureshotham Express which was on the same track.
