10 Dawood gangsters arrested

Mumbai: In a major blow to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, 10 members of his gang were arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Tuesday after being deported from the UAE.

They were earlier in the custody of Dubai Police. On November 7 and 8, nearly 30 members of Dawood's gang were arrested because of their alleged involvement in the murder of Raju bookie.

Out of these 30, 10 have been deported to Mumbai. They are now in the custody of the Crime Branch and are being questioned over their involvement various cases.

Some of the deported include Aarif Bhai Jaan - who is married to Chhota Shakeel's sister. However, when Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy was questioned as to whether Aarif had indeed been deported, he side-stepped it, preferring not to give a direct reply.

Unconfirmed sources say that others deported include Zamaar Haji, Anjum Kherwani, Salim Qureshi and Qayum -- who was said to be involved in the 1993 bomb blasts, allegedly masterminded by Dawood.

All of them are going to be produced in the court on Tuesday afternoon.

The police say that they are going to reveal everything about the arrests by Tuesday afternoon - including the reason for deportation, the charges against them, the investigations of the police and the information the police hopes to gather from these men.

Earlier this month, Abdul Rashid Hussaini Putter, also of the Dawood gang, was deported from Dubai to facilitate a probe into his alleged involvement in a fake currency racket in the metropolis.

Putter was brought to Mumbai from Dubai by an Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) team. He is wanted in several cases registered against him in Mumbai and Bangalore.

ATS official sources said the Vikhroli Police has a case registered against Putter for his involvement in a fake currency racket, amounting to the tune of Rs 1.75 lakh, in February last year.

Putter was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A M Garde at the Mazgaon courts, who remanded him in police custody till December 2.
