New Delhi: More than 150 villages have been submerged and thousands of acres of agrarian land have been destroyed in north Punjab following massive floods.
This after more than 100 cusecs of water was released from the
Bhakra Nangal dam, breaching the embankments of the Sutlej river by 150 feet.
Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Moga and Hoshiarpur districts are among the worst-affected. No casualties have been reported, but the deluge has forced many to evacuate their homes.
"At around 12 in the night, the flood came. All our children are hungry. Our beds, clothes and utensils got submerged in water," says a local citizen
Rail traffic on the Jalandhar-Ferozepur route has disrupted.
The Army has called in to assist with rescue operations and to dispense relief in the flood affected areas.
"We were on the same motorcycle. All of a sudden, due to the sudden force of water, our motorcycle got stuck. My aunt's son got drowned. I came out. The fire brigade people did nothing. The rope of the fire brigade broke," says a commuter.
“Many villagers are stranded due to water-logging. Army is helping them out. Nearly 250 families have been rescued so far,” says Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, Jatinder Singh Pannu.
Meanwhile Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal went all the way to Jalandhar, where he was spotted watching a bollywood movie.
“I have not seen a movie for the past 10-15 years. A movie called `Singh is Kinng' is playing in cinema halls. I first thought of watching the movie on video. Then I came to know that the movie is playing in Jalandhar. So I have come here to watch the movie," says the CM
