Mumbai: Ten-year-old Asma is not only living through the pain of her grievous injuries in a Mumbai hospital, but also of her nightmarish, near death experience under the wheels of a jeep driven by an eve teaser.
"The boys were in a jeep. They were making gestures. I thought I would move back and let them go, but they purposely came close to my sister. Her skirt got entangled and she was dragged. Her hand came under the wheel of the car,” says Asma's elder sister, Sana.
A student of the Swami Vivekananda School, in Chembur, Asma was returning with a friend and sister Sana from tuitions on July 14 when a group of men in their 20s began trailing them in their jeep. It's only after her parents rushed her to this hospital that the extent of her injuries were diagnosed.
"Her hand and her back are fractured. There is also a lot of skin that has been lost,” says Asma's mother, Ayesha.
But what action have the police taken in the matter?
“He has been charged with driving without a license. The owner of the car has been charged for letting him drive the car,” says Police Inspector, Chembur Police Station, Balasaheb Pachundkar.
The driver of the jeep – 22-year-old Mahendra Kamble was arrested, but has been let off on bail.
The driver of the jeep, Mahendra Kamble is 22-year-old, while the other occupants of the jeep are minors. All of them have been charged with eve teasing. But a local court thought it fit to give them bail four days later. And each time Asma cries out in pain, her mother can only call for justice.
“I want justice for my daughter. They have already got bail and there is nothing I can do about it,” says Ayesha Sheikh.
