Guwahati: The meticulously planned series of 12 blasts that ripped through four districts in Assam, were unprecedented even by terror-torn Assam's standards.

The blast left more than 60 dead and close to 300 injured.

In all, there were six blasts in Guwahati, three in Kokrajhar, two in Barpeta and one in Bongaigaon.

Each of the blasts was primed for maximum destruction. They were planted in crowded markets, timed to go off around 1130 hours in Guwahati, the state's biggest city.

One bomb went off in a busy bazaar next to the high security secretariat and assembly buildings just a 100 meters from the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's official residence and another at the High Court.

Witnesses said that it was so unexpected and they were shocked to see dead bodies scattered around.

Intelligence sources in the state say that the blasts were probably carried out by a new United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) group trained in Bangladesh, claiming that the local ULFA was incapable of carrying out such coordinated blasts.

However, the ULFA has denied any role.

The Chief Minister said the state had some inkling but nothing definite.

While the administration struggled to bring order after the destruction, angry locals vented their frustration on government vehicles and fire engines prompting the imposition of curfew in some parts of Guwahati till the evening.
