New Delhi: There has been shock and outrage over simple cataract surgeries allegedly going bad and ruining the vision of several patients in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
A free medical camp in Nellore allegedly conducted botched cataract surgeries on patients who then had to be rushed to Chennai and Vijaywada for attempts to recover vision.
In an attempt to save the residual vision, more than 12 patients were admitted to Chennai's Shankar Netralaya hospital while their relatives pray and hope that the damaged vision is recovered.
The daughter of one such alleged victim said, "Once my father's condition improves, I will surely file a case against the hospital."
District authorities in Andhra Pradesh have ordered the hospital not to conduct any further surgeries till the enquiry into the incident is completed. A fact-finding team has been sent to gather samples from victims. Officials though claim that prima facie it appears to be a case of gross medical negligence. The saline was reportedly contaminated and led to post-operation complications.
There have been repeated calls in the past for the Andhra Pradesh government to ensure procedural checks are conducted. There is a need to impose stringent hygiene measures in such free medical camps, say many.
