Mumbai/ Chennai: Medical students in Mumbai are saying it with flowers for the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

Students from nine medical colleges in the city have not been attending lectures for three days now and their main demand is to include a rural internship in the existing year of medical internship.

Among the protesters is Aniruddha Patil, who has just two months to go before his internship and the entire MBBS course gets over.

Patil came to a top college in Mumbai on a merit seat from Jalgaon in rural Maharashtra. Now, after years of hard work, being sent back is causing resentment.

“I have no problem with a rural internship but why not include it in the existing course?” says Patil.

At the forefront of this spreading protest is Tamil Nadu, Ramadoss's home state, where 7,000 students started it all three weeks ago.

With no response from the state or Centre, an indefinite hunger strike is now under way.

“We had earlier withdrawn our indefinite hunger strike as the Chief Minister had written to the Centre and to the Health Minister. But now we're starting it again as there is a need for it,” says Ashwini, a third year MBBS student.

The Tamil Nadu Government, meanwhile, has threatened stern action if the strike isn't withdrawn and students will have to vacate hostels and medical colleges would be shut down. As of now, 12 states have joined in the agitation and the students are in no mood to relent.
