Palakkad: A thirteen-year-old girl in Kerala saved four lives from drowning in the waters of Kalavappadam check dam on Saturday.

Dinu’s heroic deed has earned her the admiration of the village. She had gone for a bath, when she saw her neighbour Pushpalatha, and her three daughters, going down.

Having learnt swimming at a very young age, Dinu had no second thoughts while diving into the 15-feet deep water.

“When I came to take a bath, I saw the four were drowning. I jumped in and saved them one by one,” says 13-year-old Dinu.

It is with deep gratitude that Pushpalatha recounts the events of that evening.

“I was washing clothes here. When I saw them, the three were already sinking. I jumped into the water to save them and all of us started drowning. Dinu saw this and jumped into the water and saved us all,” says Pushpalatha

Dinu, daughter of Gangadharan, a porter, and Devaki, has many visitors now, with people lining up to congratulate the young brave heart.

Dinu's courage has also made headlines in local newspapers and she has also been rewarded with a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and the 13-year-old is savouring every bit of her newfound stardom.
