New Delhi: Sixteen people have died in a road accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Sunday morning. A jeep collided with a container truck near Shedung at around 0500 hrs IST. Five other injured are in the hospital.
The jeep carrying the marriage party from Maharashtra's Satara district rammed into the tanker which was either stationary or had slowed down near Panvel.
The jeep was moving towards Navi Mumbai's Vashi area for a wedding and all casualties are reported to be hailing from Chavneshwar village in Satara district, they said.
Police say the jeep was speeding at 130 kms per hour. The 16 dead also includes the driver of the jeep.
The Police Commissioner of Navi Mumbai Ramrao Wagh also said that over-speeding could have been the cause of the accident.
