Fifteen people were killed and five others injured when a jeep collided with a lorry on Sonna- Hipparga S N Road in Jewargi taluk here on Friday evening.
All the 20 people were natives of Harnoor village of Jewargi taluk, Gulbarga SP Praveen Pawar told Express.
They were returning from Yargal village of Sindgi taluk in Bijapur district after attending a relative’s funeral.
Of the 15 people killed, 13 died on the spot and two on the way to the hospital, he said.
Of the dead, five were men and nine women.
Twelve bodies have been identified.
Eye-witnesses said three bodies were mutilated and they could not be identified.
As there was heavy rain, rescue operations became difficult.
Gulbarga DC Prasanna Kumar also visited the spot.
Two of the five injured are said to be in a critical condition; they have been shifted to Basaveshwar Hospital in Gulbarga.
