The Liberhan Commission, formed to fix the blame for the Babri Masjid demolition on December 6, 1992, is all set to get its 42nd extension.
On August 30, when the Union Home Ministry had decided to give the commission its 41st extension, many believed it would be the last extension and the panel will submit its report within this period.
But that was not to be. Questions have now been raised on the whereabouts of Justice Liberhan and his apparent reluctance to give the report. Doubts are also being raised as to whether the Central Government is at all interested in the findings of the report.
According to sources, Justice Liberhan is in US right now and the Centre is reluctant to take up the issue at the moment. The report is ready, but if it is released, it will have to be tabled in the Parliament immediately after which, it will have to be made public.
The commission, headed by Justice MS Liberhan, was constituted by the then prime minister PV Narasimha Rao within a fortnight of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992. The commission's brief was clear: Establish the sequence of events that led to the demolition and pinpoint all those who were responsible for the demolition.
The panel was supposed to submit its report within three months of its constitution. But it's over 15 years now and till date, the government has spent more than Rs 700 lakh on the panel.

In August this year, the CNN-IBN had first reported some of the key findings of the commission, which said the commission is likely to indict Vinay Katiyar, Uma Bharti, Murli Manohar Joshi and some top VHP leaders for December 6. The report also said that LK Advani, the man who was perhaps at the centre of the entire movement, is likely to escape Liberhan's wrath.
But, the report is still not out. December 6 remains a mystery, which actually raises doubts whether the truth behind December 6, 1992, will ever be known.
In the 15 years of its proceedings, the commission recorded statements of several politicians, bureaucrats and police officials, including former UP chief minister and senior BJP leader Kalyan Singh, former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao, former deputy prime minister LK Advani and his colleagues Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati as well as Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Kalyan Singh, whose deposition was the longest, had told the commission that the state administration had done its best to protect the monument. He blamed the then Congress government for the demolition.
Rao had in his deposition accused the Kalyan Singh Government of being responsible for the demolition. Senior BJP leader LK Advani told the commission that the day of the demolition was the saddest day of his life. The commission closed the recording of evidence on June 3, 2005.
