16 crushed to death in Surat train mishap

Surat: At least 16 people were crushed to death under a train in Kakra Khadi, between Surat and Udhna in Gujarat late on Wednesday night.

According to Railway Police, the incident occurred when the victims were reportedly trying to cross the railway track. All of them were daily wage labourers hailing from Uttar Pradesh.

Bodies of victims, including two women and two children, were spotted besides the track by a driver of another train, the police said, adding the incident might have happened between 2200 hrs and 2300 hrs.

The driver of train 'Flying Rani', which runs between Surat and Mumbai, immediately informed the authorities of the incident, Railway Police Inspector H M Patel said.

Investigations were on to determine why the accident took place, he added.
