16 militants among 22 killed in Kashmir

Jammu: As summers approach, gun battles are on the rise in Jammu and Kashmir with five encounters in the past one week in Rajouri district alone. The encounters have led to the killing of over 16 militants and six Army men.

"It started with last Saturday. Two militants were shot dead in an encounter in Kalakote. Three days later, four more militants and equal number of jawans were killed in the nearby Kandi area. Again on the same day, an Army jawan died and an SHO got injured in Dharamsala. On Thursday, six militants were shot dead in Bagla," said DK Choudhary, Commandant, 152 CRPF.

And in the latest encounter in Kalakote, four militants and a jawan were killed on Friday. Security officials say all the killed militants were part of a group which infiltrated into India two weeks back.

"Out of the 42 camps, 34 are working and 2,500 are available in these camps to cross the border," said Brigadier Gurdeep Singh of 16 Core, BSG. "And with passes opening up in the summer, more such attempts are expected."

If 2009 saw the lowest ever militancy related incidents in two decades, this year has started on a rather violent note. Over 60 infiltration attempts and 45 incidents of violence so far. And, this could just be the beginning.
