16 TRS MLAs submit resignation over Telangana

Hyderabad: A day after its MPs resigned from the Lok Sabha, 16 MLAs of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti also put in their papers.

The MLAs submitted their resignation to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly speaker on Tuesday saying that their long standing demand for a separate Telangana state has not been met.

The TRS led by Chandrashekhar Rao had pulled out of the UPA government at the Centre last year. The party says the UPA put the Telangana issue on the backburner after coming to power.

The resignations come barely a year from the Lok Sabha polls, as well as the Andhra Pradesh state elections.

The TRS has 26 MLAs in the 294-member Assembly. However, 10 MLAs have turned rebels and severed links with the party.

As soon as the Assembly met for the day, the TRS members waved their resignation letters and wanted the Speaker K R Suresh Reddy to give them an opportunity to speak.

Earlier, the Speaker disallowed an adjournment motion moved by the TRS members demanding introduction of a resolution in the house on Telangana.

Amidst furore, the Speaker adjourned the house for ten minutes and held a meeting with TRS members in his chambers. When the house reassembled, TRS floor leader Vijayarama Rao announced resignations of his party members to protest the Congress Government's failure to fulfill its pre-election promise on Telangana.

"The Congress has betrayed the people of Telangana. It will be wiped out in the next election," Rao asserted.

The TRS members dared Congress members from Telangana region to submit their resignation and seek a fresh mandate from the people.
